Did you know that Blaisdell’s is a woman-owned business? I recently had the chance to ask Margee about her experiences as the owner of the company – check out her insights below!

What does being a business owner mean to you?

It means a lot of responsibility! Not only making sure the business is on track, but also making sure our employees are doing well. I feel like the mother of the group and am very protective of our team! But it also means that I can run this business the way I feel it should be run. Risk and reward. It’s challenging and I love a challenge.

What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why?

No doubt it would be my mother. Not that she ever worked in the business arena, or at least not in my lifetime. But she’s always encouraged me to work hard and do my best.  She’s especially been supportive of my entrepreneurial spirit. She would have loved to have had her own business. Still at 91 years old, she sends me business ideas and sales leads!  My mother is always in the back of my mind – I can hear her words whenever I don’t have a ready answer. She always taught me to be kind to people, firm in my beliefs, never brag, always be humble, and to live life in gratitude. Never take anything or anyone for granted and always thank God. I apply those values to my work.

What is one thing you have learned as a small business owner that has served you well over the years?

Hard work pays off. I truly feel that if you’re passionate about your work and are diligent and honest, a great outcome is inevitable. Money has never been a motivator for me.

What is your favorite aspect of your work and/or of the company?

My favorite aspect of my work is being with our team. I love these guys. I cannot say enough how much I enjoy our daily interaction, be it with our drivers, or the sales team or accounting, all of them! Everyone is on the same page and path for success. We all focus on doing what’s best for our customers. That thought is always at the forefront of our minds.

Also, it’s a really positive environment at work. And our new office is so beautiful and bright – it just feels good. Plus we all love to eat really well here!

What do you like to do outside of work for fun?

I’m really a homebody. I like to putter in my garden and cook for my family. But mostly I like to play golf. My husband and I play most weekends. We have a standard bet and he almost always lets me win 🙂

Earth Month

April is Earth Month, but here at Blaisdell’s we celebrate year-round!

What do Office Supplies and Earth Day have to do with each other? For us it means using sustainable supplies, from pens & paper to cleaning products; routing our deliveries as efficiently as possible to save gas while maintaining a Green Business status through the Alameda County Green Business Program to name a few.

The sustainable office supply category is growing to include almost anything one can think of; from remanufactured ink & toner cartridges to a new line of Wheat Copy paper made from wheat fiber instead of tree pulp!  Here are some of the personal favorites at Blaisdell’s :

Kari in Customer Service likes the FlexGrip Ultra ballpoint pen, made with 70% recycled plastics

Hoa in Accounting likes to use the Bic ECOlutions mini correction tape, made with 51% recycled plastics

Zack our Marketing Guru uses the Pilot BeGreen Precise V5 pen, made with 89% recycled materials

Emily, Account Manager, loves her At-A-Glance Recycled Appointment book, made with 100% recycled paper

Queen Bee Margee likes the Greenguard Certified Alera Neratoli chair in red, made from 30% recycled materials.  It’s very nice looking too!

My favorite are the Earthwise file folders by Esselte, made from 100% recycled paper, and they come in great colors!

We ALL love the Pilot B2P pen, made from recycled water bottles, perhaps some of you have received samples on Freebie day, or signed for your delivery with one!

What’s your favorite sustainable office supply item?  Is your business Green Certified?  If not we’re happy to walk you through the process.  Tell us what you do around your office that’s Earth Friendly- we’d love to hear!!

Until next time,

Spring Has Sprung!

Welcome back Blaisdell’s Buddies!  Adrienne’s got something to buzz about this week – take a peek!

Spring is here!  It’s time to open the doors and windows to let the fresh air in!

But when the sun comes out, it sheds light on the dusty build up after those long winter months. Time for Spring Cleaning!! We all do it at home; doesn’t your workplace deserve the same?

Try to look at your work area as if it was not yours- does it look tidy and professional?  What impression do you think office guests get when they see your work area?

Career-Spring-Cleaning

A little organizing can go a long way; this is how I do it at Blaisdell’s:

  • Step back and look at my work area; what do I really need on a daily basis? Find a new home for those items that I’ll only use occasionally.
  • Remove everything from the desktop and dust (I love Swiffer dusters!) then wipe the surface & phone, keyboard and mouse (Seventh Generation makes a great eco-friendly wipe)
  • Replace and organize my desktop items, now is the perfect time to place my office tools in the right place and within reach.
  • Clear out underneath the desk; empty trash & recycling bins, sweep/vacuum.
  • Purge files; recycle what I don’t need anymore, use storage file boxes for items that I don’t need in front of me but want to reference later.

With the weather improving, being inside all day can be rough, but keeping a neat and clean cubicle (or corner office or workbench!) makes my workday better and more productive!

Speaking of productive, Blaisdell’s now offers Customized Coffee programs for your workplace- more on that next time so stay tuned!

Until next time,

Adrienne Quitugua-Hervin

Welcome to Blaisdell’s Buzz

Ok, ok, the team here at Blaisdell’s wants us to start a blog. I’ve been elected to start us off, although frankly I’m a newbie at blogging, so bear with me. But here it goes anyway…

The first question that came to mind was, what the heck are we going to call our blog? Well, in my mind, since we’re all busy little bees around here I thought of ‘Blaisdell’s Buzz’, since there is so much to buzz about.

The next question is, what exactly should we be blogging about? I have long thought that those of us at Blaisdell’s are not really in the business of simply selling you a bunch of paper clips. That is really not why we are here. In fact, we are here to be of total and complete service to you. Whether it’s to help you find just the right product. Or deliver your ‘stuff’ just in time. Or tell you about new and exciting things happening that are designed to save you time and money. Bringing you solutions and great new products that will help you have a Great Workday. And while we’re doing just that, we’d like to get to know you better – you are important to us!  We really and truly enjoy your company. That’s just the way we roll here. Our customers become our friends – in fact, you are now an official Blaisdell’s Biz Buddy

So expect to hear lots of fun and interesting topics from Blaisdell’s Buzz. We’ll talk about the team at Blaisdell’s and what we’re up to these days. These are all the folks that you know and you’ve met or spoken to or emailed at our office. We’ll discuss product categories that will help improve your workday, like ergonomics, our new coffee service, website updates, and so much more! We will invite guest bloggers to talk about pertinent work place products and industry news too – maybe even the weather or ask you what color we should paint our new offices. And of course, we will even ask you what you’d like us to blog about.

We are really interested to hear from you! We want to get to know you and your office better.  What’s new and exciting? So please give us feedback anytime – as with everything, we aim to please.

Thanks for stopping by. Let’s see how much fun we can have. Because for us, it’s all about Bringing you a Great Workday!

And now I will turn Blaisdell’s Buzz over to much more capable hands. Stay tuned!
